What's left behind the scenes

The title of each episode is taken from a line of dialogue spoken within that episode.
Shonda Rhimes was inspired to create the series by the TV show 'The Unit' (2007-2012) and Robert Luketic's comedy 'Legally Blonde' (2001).
The famous scene in which Professor Annalise Keating removes her makeup and takes off her wig was conceived by Viola Davis.
Annalise's classroom in the pilot episode is shown as one of the actual classrooms at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. This classroom was filmed for the pilot, and a set was later constructed for the filming of subsequent episodes.
Carla Sousa originally auditioned for the role of Michaela Pratt, and then for Rebecca Sutter. Only after that did the series creator, Peter Nowalk, offer her the role of Laurel Castillo.
Shonda Rhimes was adamantly opposed to filming more than 15 episodes per season. She was convinced that it would be impossible to maintain the series' dramatic tension over a larger number of episodes, which would negatively impact how the show was perceived.
