What's left behind the scenes

  • Many scenes were filmed in the actual prison cell where John Wayne Gacy served his sentence.
  • Stacey Keach spent six months in a British prison and based his character on the warden of that prison.
  • The character 'D.B. Cooper' is based on a real person who, in 1971, after hijacking a plane and receiving a requested ransom of $200,000, jumped from the aircraft with twenty-dollar bills weighing a total of 21 pounds (approximately 9.5 kilograms) attached to his body. He was never caught.
  • According to Robert Nepper (T-Bag), his character's hairstyle mimics the haircut of one of the professors Robert had studied under.
  • The name of Fox River State Penitentiary is taken from the river that flows through Western Chicagoland, near the filming location.
  • Initially, 13 episodes were planned, but due to the project's success, the studio expanded the first season to 22 episodes.
  • According to Rockmond Dunbar, his character, Benjamin Franklin, was originally intended to appear in only the first two episodes.
  • The idea for the series was proposed to Fox Broadcasting Company in 2003, but the studio was unsure of its success, so the project was shelved. Later, the producers intended to create a ten-episode miniseries. Rumor has it that Steven Spielberg and Bruce Willis were interested in the project. However, the miniseries idea also failed to materialize. It was only after the colossal success of series such as '24' (2001-2010) and 'Lost' (2004-2010) that the studio gave the project the green light, and production began in 2004.
  • The state of Illinois does not use the electric chair to carry out the death penalty. Currently, a moratorium on the death penalty is in effect in the state of Illinois.
  • The series was banned from being shown in 13 prisons.
  • Wentworth Miller began filming just one week after being cast in the role.
  • Silas Weir Mitchell, who played Charles Patoshik, had auditioned for the role of T-Bag.
  • If you wanted to get the same tattoo as Michael, it would take about 200 hours to ink, and the cost would be approximately $15,000-$20,000.
  • It took makeup artists four and a half hours to apply the tattoo to Michael's body.
  • Fox River State Penitentiary is a fictional prison. In reality, the prison where filming took place is called the Joliet Correctional Center (Joliet Prison). This prison operated from 1858 to 2002 and ceased operations completely by 2004. It is a Level 1 prison, meaning it is a maximum-security facility.
  • Paul Adelstein, who played Agent Paul Kellerman, originally auditioned for the role of Lincoln Burrows.
  • The security regime of Fox River prison is often translated as "extra-strict," which is a common mistake. In fact, such a regime does not exist. Russian prisons only have a "special" regime, while US prisons use security levels 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  • A four-month gap between the airing of the 13th and 14th episodes of the first season led to an inevitable and glaring continuity error: Lincoln's execution was supposed to take place in May, but winter was raging on screen.
  • The idea for the series (a man intentionally goes to prison in order to later escape from it) was conceived by one of Paul Scheuring's colleagues. He liked the premise, but initially struggled with two challenges: why anyone would intentionally try to get into prison, and how to fit such a plot into the framework of a television series. Later, he developed the storylines involving an innocent brother and a conspiracy involving the highest echelons of power.
  • At the end of the first season, Dr. Sara Tancredi was meant to die from a drug overdose. However, due to the character's popularity and the studio's request, Sarah Wayne Callies' character was kept alive for the second season, while it was decided to kill off one of the first season's key characters in the first episode of the second season.
  • In the fourth episode of the third season, while Alex Mahone walks through Sona prison searching for a black pen, and also in the eleventh episode of the same season during Michael's conversation with a 16-year-old basketball player, a Russian inscription is clearly visible on the prison wall: "How nice it is there," with a drawing next to it depicting a skeleton pierced by a spear.
  • Sarah Wayne Callies, who left the series after the second season due to disagreements with the producers, asked her fans not to boycott the third season. The fans, in turn, made hundreds of origami cranes, hoping they would help bring the actress back.
  • In psychology, the phenomenon where a doctor falls in love with their patient (like Sarah did with Michael) is called the 'Florence Nightingale effect'.
  • In Season 2, Episode 7, at the 37-minute mark, the film crew is visible in the reflection of a car.
  • In Season 3, Episode 8, around the 32-minute mark, the Company's assassins take a girl hostage and threaten Link. The assassin holding the girl is initially holding a pistol with a silencer; in the next shot, it is a different pistol without a silencer, and then the assassin has a pistol with a silencer again.
  • Despite what Petya tells Sucre, the motorcycle is not a 1952 Ural. In 1952, it did not have a front telescopic fork with two load-adjustable spring-hydraulic shock absorbers, disc brakes, or an electric starter; the instrument panel had a different shape (teardrop-shaped), and the valve covers, as well as the cylinders and the engine block as a whole, were different. In reality, the film uses a 2004-2005 Ural Solo motorcycle.
  • In Season 1, Episode 21, when the prisoners began their escape, Sucre pushed the toilet against the wall; however, in the final episode, Pope saw an open gap in Scofield's cell.
  • At the very end of Season 2, Episode 21, Michael speaks with Mahone using a radio phone with a long extended antenna, but later in the conversation, it is visible that he is using a different radio phone with a short antenna and a simpler shape.
  • At the 3-minute mark of Season 3, Episode 2, Michael approaches a water barrel; he is served 1-2 cm of water from the bottom with a ladle, and Michael walks away. In the next scene, Michael is seen bringing the glass to his mouth, and it is already half-full of water.
  • In Season 4, Episode 5, at the 13-minute mark, Don Self begins to draw a symbol with a marker that he saw on the safe. The two circles do not touch each other and the lines of the circumferences do not meet; however, in the next scene, once the symbol is finished, all the circles intersect and the lines meet.
  • In Season 4, Episode 15, Michael is lying in bed drawing four squares on a piece of paper with chemical element symbols inside them. In the next scene, it is shown that each of the symbols has been circled.
  • In Panama, Sucre suffered a gunshot wound to the collarbone area. However, in Season 4, Episode 7, at the 35-minute mark, he is shown shirtless from the waist up, and there is not a single scar on his chest.
  • In the second season, when Bellick figures out the plan of Scofield's wife to get on his good side, her cardigan is unbuttoned, and it remains unbuttoned as he begins to push her into the room where Michael and Lincoln are tied up; however, in the next shot, her cardigan is already buttoned, even though no one had freed her hands at that moment.
  • In season 1, episode 5, when Dr. Tancredi examines Burrows in his solitary confinement cell, she asks about hereditary diseases in his family, and Lincoln answers that his mother had liver cancer, but for some reason forgets about the tumor that actually caused her death. Later, in season 4, it is revealed that Michael also has a tumor, which he inherited from his mother.
  • In season 1, episode 10, while the prisoners are digging a tunnel in the breakroom, Lincoln and Michael discuss their plans after the escape and both admit that they cannot swim. Yet in season 3, episode 12, after escaping from Sona, they swim a long distance with great confidence.
  • When Linc shoots the hitman holding the girl in the head, the hitman is looking directly at Linc, but the corpse shows a bullet hole in the left temple, even though the hitman's left temple was pressed against the hostage.
  • At the end of season 4, episode 20, Christina Scofield shoots Lincoln with a silenced pistol, however, the shot sounds as if there were no silencer.
  • In Season 1, Episode 11, there is an error at 30:51: when Quinn is pushed into the well, the phone is lying next to his leg, but at 35:48 of the same episode, Quinn takes the phone out of his pocket.
  • The events of Season 1 take place in April–May 2005. In Season 1, Episode 19, at the 11-minute mark, a police officer reporting the suspect's car description over the radio says it is a 2006 Mustang.
  • In Season 2, Episode 5, at the 24-minute mark, where Rockmond Dunbar's character (Benjamin Franklin) jumps from a train into a river, it is visible that the actor is replaced by a stunt double wearing a bulky life jacket under his shirt.
  • In Season 1, when Michael first arrives at Fox River, his file shows his date of birth as August 9, 1978. In Season 4, Episode 17, Lincoln tells Alex that Michael was born in 1976. In Season 4, Episode 22, the date of birth on Michael's tombstone is listed as August 10, 1974.
  • In Season 4, Episode 22, Michael Scofield's tombstone lists the date of death as 11.4.2005. In Season 5, Episode 1, a different date is shown: 11.4.2010.
  • At the 29-minute mark of Season 5, Episode 7, when Jacob is talking on the phone with the agent, it can be noticed that the agent's phone is showing the smartphone's main menu. Additionally, during Sarah's phone call at the 31-minute mark, it is visible that the other person's phone is on the lock screen.
