What's left behind the scenes

  • The cinema scenes required numerous retakes. Between takes, Tim Curry, still in his Pennywise costume, would frequently go up on stage in front of the screen and sing along with the children involved in the shoot. Many of the children, especially those in the background, didn't even know who he was and assumed he was just an entertainer.
  • Tim Curry was so convincing and terrifying as Pennywise the Clown that everyone avoided him during filming.
  • The mini-series' writer and director, Tommy Lee Wallace, admitted that he had not read Stephen King's novel of the same name (1986), which served as the literary source for the script. He wanted the mini-series' screenplay to speak for itself.
  • Ironically, Tim Curry, famous for his brilliant portrayal of the monstrous clown Pennywise, suffers from coulrophobia (the fear of clowns) himself. He insisted on a contract clause stating that while he was in makeup on set, there should be no reflective surfaces within sight; once, a makeup artist was nearly fired for holding a mirror while applying Curry's makeup.
  • Billy, the author of the novel 'The Shimmering', is an allusion to Stephen King's 'The Shining'.
  • Initially, Tim Curry was reluctant to take the role of Pennywise because he didn't want to deal with such a heavy amount of makeup. When he played Darkness in Ridley Scott's cinematic fairy tale 'Legend' (1985), the role had also been demanding, requiring him to spend several hours at a time in the makeup chair. Upon learning this, director and screenwriter Tommy Lee Wallace ordered that the time the actor spent in the makeup chair be reduced, which proved appropriate given how convincingly Curry portrayed Pennywise.
  • While filming in the sewers, the actors had to be very careful, especially about what they touched, as any infection could easily lead to tetanus.
  • The surname of the night watchman in the madhouse is Koontz, as is the name of Stephen King's main rival, writer Dean Koontz.
