What's left behind the scenes

  • Traditionally, the opening credits of each episode of the series feature the song 'Little Boxes,' performed either by its author Malvina Reynolds or by other famous musicians. At the end of the third season finale, 'Little Boxes' is performed by Pete Seeger. In the opening credits of the 12th episode of the third season, the song was performed almost entirely in Russian by Angelina Moysova.
  • It was originally intended that the character named Doug would only appear in the pilot episode, but the producers liked actor Kevin Nealon so much that the role was significantly expanded.
  • Jennifer Jason Leigh was absent for a significant part of the seventh season because she could not leave New York, where she was performing on stage; consequently, a plot device was created where her character communicates with other characters via video call. She filmed her scenes at home during breaks between her stage performances.
  • While working on the fourth and fifth seasons, the screenwriters noticed the blossoming feelings between Mary Louise Parker and Justin Kirk and increased the number of scenes in which they played together.
  • Alanis Morissette, a Canadian-American singer-songwriter and a huge fan of the series, approached the producers to ask if she could have a role in the show. Screenwriter and producer Gengis Cohen happened to be thinking about introducing a character named Audra (based on Cohen's friend, who was also named Audra), so she offered the role to Morissette.
  • According to Gengis Cohen, twin sisters Amanda and Rachel Pace were somewhat envious of each other because one had to perform in makeup and a wig while the other did not, so they occasionally swapped roles.
  • Gengis Cohen once mentioned that for many years she wanted to bring Justin Chatwin back to the series as Josh Wilson, but he was always busy. Eventually, she sent the actor a text message asking him to appear at least in the final episode. As a result, Chatwin only appears in the first and last episodes.
  • It was originally intended that Chatwin would join the permanent cast as Nancy's partner; however, he was constantly occupied with other projects, so another actor had to be found for the role. The role of the partner went to Justin Kirk.
  • In the DVD commentary, series creator Jenji Kohan discusses how certain genres or specific directors she admires—or thought of while writing—influenced the season finales. The first season finale was a tribute to Francis Ford Coppola's gangster saga The Godfather (1972), which is where the episode's title comes from; the second season finale was inspired by Quentin Tarantino, hence the numerous characters holding each other at gunpoint; the third season finale was a tribute to Robert Altman (1925-2006) and his many intersecting plotlines; the fourth season finale is dedicated to Sergio Leone (1929-1989) and his spaghetti westerns, featuring many close-ups; the fifth season finale is a nod to Pedro Almodóvar, which is reflected in the episode's title; and the sixth season finale is dedicated to the memory of Alfred Hitchcock (1899-1980), which is why Kohan herself makes a silent cameo appearance.
