What's left behind the scenes

  • In the 5th episode of Season 1, Abed jokingly announces that Troy is a relative of actor Danny Glover. The role of Troy is played by Donald Glover, who shares a surname with Danny Glover.
  • Danny Pudi, the actor who plays Abed Nadir, is half-Polish and speaks Polish reasonably well.
  • During the opening credits, Joel McHale's name is shown against the backdrop of a drawn head peeking over a wall. This is the so-called Kilroy. The graffiti drawing of a head with the caption "Kilroy was here" was wildly popular in English-speaking Western countries between the early 1940s and the late 1950s and became a part of the mass culture of that era.
  • In the whaling season episode of Season 4, Jeff and Dean wore the same swim trunks they wore in the pool episode of Season 1.
  • NBC cancelled the project after the fifth season in May 2014. Sony, the owner of the series, entered negotiations with Hulu (a website and subscription service providing streaming video from many American studios and channels) to film a sixth season. In March 2015, the episodes of the new season were premiered exclusively on Yahoo! Screen.
  • In different episodes, the posters in Abed's room are hung in different places. The room is decorated with posters for the films "Back to the Future Part II" (Robert Zemeckis, 1989), "Stand by Me" (Rob Reiner, 1986), and "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" (Steven Spielberg, 1982).
  • The professor, played by John Oliver, is absent in the 3rd and 4th seasons, which Troy mentions in the episode 'Introduction to Felt Dolls.' The professor returns in the 5th season and explains his absence as the need to care for his sick mother in the UK.
  • Initially, Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna wanted to cast Ray Liotta as Buzz in Season 5. Harmon discussed this with the actor over the phone several times, but in the end, the role went to Jonathan Banks.
  • After the final credits of the 22nd episode of Season 3, the hashtag #sixseasonsandamovie appears on the screen.
  • Chevy Chase left the project toward the end of the 4th season, but agreed to make one more appearance in a small role. It is known that there was a conflict between Chase and Dan Harmon; however, Chase left during a season when Harmon was not running the show. Harmon later stated that the conflict between them was successfully resolved.
  • In the 5th episode of season 5, Troy (Donald Glover) leaves his friends on a boat called the Childish Tycoon. This is a direct reference to Childish Gambino, the stage name Glover uses as a rapper and singer.
  • Beetlejuice appears in the background immediately after his name is spoken for the third time in the series.
  • The news ticker during the news program in the 6th episode of the 5th season states that 'pirates in the Gulf of Mexico have captured LeVar Burton and someone else.' This implies that Troy will no longer appear in the series.
  • In the initial version of the pilot episode, Jeff's last name was Crocker instead of Winger.
  • In one episode, Abed, played by Danny Pudi, tries to seduce Annie, played by Alison Brie. To do this, Abed impersonates Don Draper, one of the characters from the series 'Mad Men' (2007-2015). Alison Brie played the role of Trudy Campbell in 'Mad Men,' and she retained this role even after being cast in 'Community.' It often happened that the actress would film as Trudy in the morning and then head to the 'Community' set to transform into Annie. According to the actress, the creators of both series were understanding of her situation and made every effort to ensure her filming schedules for both projects did not overlap.
  • The robot that Abed and Troy built in the Season 1 episode "The Art of Debate" "comes to life" in a flashback in the Season 2 episode "Human Memory Paradigms." This is a reference to a conversation between Abed and Troy in "The Art of Debate," where Abed claims that the robot will come to life if its circuits are poured with water from a hookah.
  • After the third season, Sony Pictures Television fired Dan Harmon, the series creator and showrunner (an executive producer responsible for the overall direction and development of the project, who also serves as a writer and script editor). Crew members complained that Harmon's behavior had caused repeated downtime and delays, and that he lacked people skills. Harmon was replaced by David Garaciou. Writers Chris McKenna and Dino Stamatopoulos also left the project. The fourth season proved to be a failure. Garaciou and Port were fired, and Harmon was brought back. McKenna and Stamatopoulos returned shortly after.
  • In the 4th season, which was filmed in Dan Harmon's absence, the main cast members were given more freedom of expression on camera than usual.
  • In the 6th episode of Season 5, Abed and Rachel watch the animated series 'Rick and Morty' (2013) on television, one of whose creators is Dan Harmon, the creator of 'Community'.
  • In the 'Repilot' episode of the 5th season, there is a discussion about how Zach Braff only appears in the first few episodes of the final season of 'Scrubs' (2001-2010). Troy remarks that working on the series made Braff callous and ungrateful. Donald Glover himself, the actor who played Troy, appeared only in the first 5 episodes of the 5th season before leaving the project.
  • The show's creator, Dan Harmon, was one of the founders of Channel 101, a non-profit monthly short film festival in Los Angeles. Many of the actors involved in the series participated in the festival, including Jack Black, Drew Carey, Rob Corddry, Chevy Chase, Donald Glover, John Oliver, and others.
  • In every season of the series, the so-called "Wilhelm scream" (one of the most famous movie clichés and a kind of "Easter egg" among Hollywood directors) is heard at least once.
  • The series contains numerous jabs at its competing project, the show "Losers" (2009-2015).
  • The character Abed is based on a real person named Abed Ghaith.
  • The character in the series named Pierce Hawthorne made his fortune producing wet wipes. The actor who played him, Chevy Chase, comes from a family whose fortune was also made in the production of personal hygiene products. The actor's real name is Cornelius Crane Chase; his grandfather was Cornelius Vanderbilt Chase, who at one time inherited Crazne Plumbing, a company that manufactured plumbing fixtures, specifically toilets.
  • The creator of the series, Dan Harmon, based the characters of Jeff Winger and Britta Perry on his younger self and his girlfriend at the time.
  • In 2014, Yvette Nicole Brown confirmed that she requested an early termination of her contract for Season 6, as her father's failing health required her constant presence.
  • Initially, Dan Harmon wanted Annie to be Asian or Latina, but he cast Alison Brie in the role. Later, he still introduced the character Annie Kim to the series, played by Irene Choi.
