What's left behind the scenes

  • The first season was filmed in a real office. During the second season, NBC moved filming to a special studio that replicated the environment of the first season, including the memorial plaques and certificates hanging on the walls.
  • A detailed script was written for every episode of the series, but the actors were always given the opportunity to improvise.
  • Four supporting actors share names with their characters: Angela Martin (Angela Kinsey), Oscar Martinez (Oscar Nuñez), Phyllis Vance (Phyllis Smith), and Creed Bratton (Creed Bratton).
  • The creators of the series used some of the famous brands shown on screen as paid product placement. However, a significant portion of the products appeared without contracts with the manufacturers—the authors chose products that would emphasize the characters' personalities.
  • The computers on the office set are connected to the internet. The actors claim that when they are off-camera during filming, they often check their email and simply surf the web.
  • Paul Giamatti, Martin Short, Hank Azaria, and Bob Odenkirk were considered for the role of Michael Scott. Rainn Wilson (Dwight) also auditioned for the role of Scott, but the directors felt the role of Dwight was a better fit for him.
  • Dunder Mifflin—the company the office employees work for—is fictional.
  • Unlike other sitcoms, 'The Office' is filmed with multiple cameras in the style of a documentary.
  • Deleted scenes and episodes are not logically removed from the overall narrative line; they are sometimes included in reruns to supplement an episode. As an experiment, the creators also made footage and episodes that didn't make it into the TV version available online on the network's official website.
  • Four of the lead actors are from Massachusetts: Steve Carell (Michael Scott), John Krasinski (Jim Halpert), B.J. Novak (Ryan Howard), and Mindy Kaling (Kelly Kapoor). Guest star Nancy Carell (Carol Stills), Steve Carell's wife, is also from Massachusetts.
  • John Krasinski and B.J. Novak attended the same school, Newton South High School, in Newton, Massachusetts. Both graduated in 1997.
  • Brian Baumgartner (Kevin) and Ed Helms (Andy) both graduated from Westminster School in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Some shots from the opening credits, specifically the footage of the building, were filmed by John Krasinski and his friends from a personal Jeep. At the time, John had already landed the role and was preparing for filming.
  • Steve Carell watched only a few minutes of the British version of the series and stopped because he did not want to imitate Ricky Gervais's performance as the manager. On the other hand, John Krasinski watched the entire original series with great enthusiasm.
  • The Penn Paper building from the intro is located on Mifflin Avenue in Scranton, Pennsylvania. This is likely where the name of the fictional company 'Dunder Mifflin' originated.
  • The main office intro was parodied in 'The Simpsons' (Season 22, Episode 4) and 'American Dad!' (Season 6, Episode 18).
  • In early episodes, the camera crews were primarily limited by the office space, but as the show expanded, the characters' personal lives were included, and the cameras took on an omnipresent, even intrusive role—making every aspect of the characters' lives accessible to the viewer. The cameras began following the characters from the office to their homes.
  • The series frequently mentions that the characters Phyllis Lapin-Vance and Michael Scott are the same age and previously attended the same university. In reality, Phyllis Smith is 11 years older than Steve Carell.
  • Poor Richard's Pub, a bar often mentioned in the series, is a real bar in South Scranton. The 'South Side Lanes' bowling alley is located there.
  • Some actors in lead and supporting roles wrote scripts for several episodes. B.J. Novak (Ryan), Paul Lieberstein (Toby), and Mindy Kaling (Kelly) wrote 12 of the 28 episodes of the first and second seasons. Lieberstein independently wrote the episode "Money" from the fourth season. Steve Carell wrote two episodes: "Casino Night" and "The Science of Survival." Michael Schur, who wrote twenty episodes, plays Dwight's cousin, Mose Schrute.
