What's left behind the scenes

  • Dr. Cox often calls J.D. by feminine names. This was an idea from actor John McGinley (Cox), who in real life jokes this way with his best friend and neighbor, actor John Cusack.
  • John C. McGinley, who portrayed Dr. Cox on screen, spends much of his time off-camera with his son Max, who has Down syndrome, and is actively involved in fundraising to help those suffering from this condition.
  • In the 11th episode of Season 7, Bob Kelso is still the chief of medicine, even though he had already left that position in the 9th episode.
  • Neil Flynn, who played the Janitor, originally auditioned for the role of Dr. Cox.
  • Dr. Perry Cox's wife, Jordan, is played by Krista Miller, the real-life wife of the show's creator, Bill Lawrence. When Krista became pregnant, the writers decided to make her character pregnant as well. However, they decided not to cast Krista and Bill's newborn son as the son of Perry and Jordan; instead, the role of baby Jack is played by twins, Jacob and Andrew.
  • The hospital scenes were filmed in a real, but defunct, hospital in North Hollywood (California, USA). Some other sets, such as the bar and John Dorian's apartment, were also filmed in this same hospital.
  • In one episode, JD watches the movie "The Fugitive" (1993), which featured Neil Flynn, who plays the janitor in the series.
  • Since the series focuses heavily on the main characters' work and most of the action takes place in a hospital, several medical consultants were hired. Among them were doctors Jonathan Doris, John Turk, and Dolly Clock, whose names served as the basis for the characters' names (John Dorian, Christopher Turk, and Molly Clock, respectively).
  • In the 15th episode of the first season, after having sex with Elliot, J.D. says that he hasn't had sex with any other girls since medical school and that she is the fifth, but in the 6th episode of the first season, he had sex with Dr. Cox's ex-wife.
  • The character's real name is Chris Turk. "Turkelton" is a nickname given to him by another character, Dr. Bob Kelso.
  • For the broadcast of the series in some countries, the foreign languages spoken by the main characters were changed. For example, for the broadcast in Spain, Carla's native language was changed from Spanish to Italian, and in the German version, Elliot speaks Danish instead of German.
  • Sam Lloyd, who plays Ted, is actually—as in the series—the lead singer of the musical group "The Blanks," which performs a cappella versions of theme songs from TV shows, cartoons, and commercials. His bandmates also appear in the series.
  • The main character's (JD) full name is John Michael Dorian.
  • The title of each episode begins with the word "My..." This is because the series is narrated from the perspective of one of the characters, Dr. John Dorian. A few episodes have different titles ("His...", "Her...") because they are narrated by other characters. In the episode "Their Story," several supporting characters serve as the narrators.
  • Literally, the title of the series 'Scrubs' is translated as 'bushes' in some dictionaries, but there is another definition—it is the name of the surgical attire, consisting of a shirt and pants. In medical slang, the term 'scrubs' is also used to refer to medical school graduates.
  • In the eighth episode of the third season ("My Friend the Doctor"), when Turk jumps out of the car, footage appears from the movie 'Vanilla Sky' (2001) showing David Aames' car falling from a bridge.
  • The X-ray featuring the show's title in the opening credits is hanging incorrectly, as the heart is on the right and the liver is on the left.
  • Some of the show's creators appeared as supporting actors. Among them are writer and producer Mike Schwartz, who played the courier Lloyd; producer Randall Winston, who appeared as the security guard Leonard; and writer Gabrielle Allan, who played a nurse.
  • Turk's mobile phone number is 225-5887, which corresponds to the letters CALL TUR on the keypad. This phone number actually exists and belongs to the production crew. 'Scrubs' fans often send text messages and even call this number, and the crew members are happy to respond. However, they occasionally get tired and turn on an answering machine with messages from the show's main characters.
  • In the third episode of the eighth season, the chief of medicine says that Perry Cox has a silly last name. Notably, the chief of medicine is played by Courteney Cox.
  • In the 11th episode of Season 6, Dr. Cox appears with a shaved head; however, in the following episodes, his hairstyle is the same as before until the 15th, which reveals why he shaved his head.
