Short description
The show follows Crime Scene Investigators working for the Miami-Dade Police Department as they use physical evidence, similar to their Las Vegas counterparts, to solve grisly murders. The series mixes deduction, gritty subject matter, and character-driven drama in the same vein as the original series in the CSI franchise, except that the Miami CSIs are cops first, scientists second.

What's left behind the scenes
- The series features on-location footage of Miami, Florida; however, when it comes to the beaches, those were filmed in Manhattan Beach, a suburb of Los Angeles.
- The series repeatedly shows criminals being escorted from the police station doors to a patrol car or a bus taking them to prison. In reality, police try to avoid such situations for the exact reason shown in the series—to prevent encounters with reporters, victims' relatives, and so on.
- Lieutenant Horatio Caine was named after Horatio Alger (1832-1899), an American writer, poet, journalist, and clergyman, who was considered one of the most prolific American authors of the 19th century (his complete works approach a hundred volumes).
- When the series mentions the prison in Dade County, the viewer sees aerial footage of two correctional facilities. These are state prisons located next to each other in Dade County.
- The building housing the forensics team's headquarters is located in Hawthorne, California.
- The episode "Dark Room" (2006) proved to be very difficult for actress Eva LaRue Callahan, who played Natalia Boa Vista, as her sister, Nika LaRue, had found herself in a similar situation. Nika had been offered the role of Anya Boa Vista, but she declined.
