What's left behind the scenes
- The film included a scene in which Wilma Dean Lumis, lying in the bathtub, argues with her mother. She then jumps out of the tub and runs naked down the hallway to her bedroom, where the camera focuses on a close-up of her bare legs frantically kicking on the mattress. Hollywood censors and the Catholic League deemed this episode unsuitable for public viewing, so director Elia Kazan cut a small part of the scene, leaving only the jump from the tub and the run to the bedroom.

- Dennis Hopper auditioned for the role of Bud Stamper.
- The film's title is taken from a poem by William Wordsworth.
