Short description

A fragile Kansas girl's unrequited and forbidden love for a handsome young man from the town's most powerful family drives her to heartbreak and madness.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film included a scene in which Wilma Dean Lumis, lying in the bathtub, argues with her mother. She then jumps out of the tub and runs naked down the hallway to her bedroom, where the camera focuses on a close-up of her bare legs frantically kicking on the mattress. Hollywood censors and the Catholic League deemed this episode unsuitable for public viewing, so director Elia Kazan cut a small part of the scene, leaving only the jump from the tub and the run to the bedroom.
  • "Splendor in the Grass" is the first American film to depict a French kiss.
  • Dennis Hopper auditioned for the role of Bud Stamper.
  • The film's title is taken from a poem by William Wordsworth.
  • Jane Fonda auditioned for the role of Wilma Dean Lumis, but did not get it. Natalie Wood and Diane Varsi were on the final casting list for the role, with Wood ultimately being chosen. Lee Remick also auditioned for the role of Wilma.
  • Bada's real name is Arthur.
