Short description

A very free adaptation of Marlowe's 'Doctor Faustus', Goethe's 'Faust' and various other treatments of the old legend of the man who sold his soul to the devil. A nondescript man is lured by a strange map into a sinister puppet theatre, where he finds himself immersed in an indescribably weird version of the play, blending live actors, clay animation and giant puppets.

What's left behind the scenes

The film employs techniques from traditional folk puppet theater. There are also many allusions to medieval plays about Doctor Faustus.
The myth of Faustus flows into parallel myths: an episode where Faustus, in a theater basement, breaks a glass flask containing a homunculus, places a note in its mouth, and the doll comes to life – this story is clearly from another, albeit genetically related, mythology.
The film features music by Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as music by Gounod from his opera of the same name.
