Short description

Black Books centres around the foul tempered and wildly eccentric bookshop owner Bernard Black. Bernard’s devotion to the twin pleasures of drunkenness and wilful antagonism deepens and enriches both his life and that of Manny, his assistant. Bearded, sweet and good, Manny is everything that Bernard isn’t and is punished by Bernard relentlessly just for the crime of existing. They depend on each other for meaning as Fran, their oldest friend, depends on them for distraction. Black Books is a haven of books, wine and conversation, the only threat to the group’s peace and prosperity is their own limitless stupidity.

What's left behind the scenes

Bill Bailey's character was originally Jewish.
In the original version, Fran was named Valerie and worked as a philosophy teacher.
The sitcom is titled 'Black Books,' which can be translated as 'Black's Books' or interpreted as an idiomatic expression meaning to be 'blacklisted,' i.e., to be in someone's bad books.
At the 4-minute mark of the first episode of the third season, while Manny is standing behind the counter of the new bookstore, the state of the cupcake he crushed in surprise changes. It switches between being crushed and whole across several frames.
Manny's surname is Bianco, which means 'white' in Italian. Bernard's surname is Black, which means 'black'.
Tamsin Greg was pregnant during the filming of the first season.
Initially, Manny's surname was Zimmerman—a reference to Bob Dylan's real name.
The character of Bernard was inspired by a real bookstore owner in Dublin known to the actor who played the role, Dylan Moran.
