What's left behind the scenes
- Penn Badgley, who played the role of Joe, almost refused to film, believing that the series overly romanticized stalking (the unwanted obsessive attention to one person by another person or group of people). The show's creators managed to persuade him otherwise. The actor was told that he was perfect for the role precisely because of this attitude toward the character he would be playing, ensuring that the audience would know for certain that he is indeed the villain.
- Unlike his character, Penn Badgley does not feel like a fish in water on social media. According to one of his co-stars, Shay Mitchell, before starting work on the series, Penn had never even heard of the microblogging service Tumblr and knew very little about Instagram and similar platforms.
- The character named Paco (Luca Padovan) does not exist in Caroline Kepnes' 2014 novel of the same name. He was added to the screen adaptation to bring more drama to the plot.
- The first season aired on the Lifetime channel, and a second season was ordered even before the first season's premiere in September 2018. Ratings turned out to be low, and the channel backed out of the deal for the second season. Netflix bought the rights to the series, and the second season was released there in December 2019.
- The interior of the bookstore where Joe works was filmed on a set in the Bronx, while a bookstore at 1575 York Avenue was used for exterior shots. Gracie's, a nearby wine shop, periodically appears in various episodes.
- In the first episode, Beck, played by Elizabeth Lail, buys the book "Desperate Characters" (1970) by Paula Fox (1923-2017). Fox was the grandmother of Courtney Love, who in turn was married to Kurt Cobain (1967-1994), the vocalist and guitarist of Nirvana. Later, Beck is shown wearing a Nirvana t-shirt. The store next to the bookstore shares the same name. Furthermore, the vegetable store where Joe works in the second season is named Anavrin (a palindrome of the word Nirvana).
- One of the last books Paco reads is Emily Brontë's (1818-1848) Wuthering Heights (1847).
- Mark Bloom, who played the bookstore owner in Season 1, was set to appear again on screen in a flashback in Season 3, but passed away from COVID-related complications before filming began. This occurred in March 2020.
- Filming the subway scene, in which Joe saves the character played by Elizabeth Lail after she falls onto the tracks, took 8 hours.
- The ten episodes of the first season were split in half and assigned to be filmed by male and female directors.
