Short description

When Kaito Kuroba‘s father dies under mysterious circumstances, he finds out his father's secret identity; a famous international criminal known as International Criminal 1412: the Phantom Thief, and that he was murdered by a mysterious organization for refusing to aid them in retrieving the "Pandora Gem" – a jewel that grants immortality. He vows to stop the organization from obtaining the gem, and assumes his father's identity. Kaito researches and steals famous priceless gems with interesting histories from incredibly well-defended areas, but always returns them after the next full moon.

What's left behind the scenes

As is often the case in Japanese plots, the main character has a speaking name. In this spelling, Kaito means 'jovial person' and sounds the same as the word 'kaito,' meaning 'phantom thief.' The surname Kuroba is written with characters meaning 'dark wing'.
The characters of the Kaito manga periodically cross paths with the characters of the Detective Conan manga, also written by Gosho Aoyama; Kaito Kuroba successfully impersonated Shinichi Kudo—the adult version of Conan. The number in the series title refers to the protagonist's father, who originally used the pseudonym Kaito Kid or Kaito 1412. The famous writer Yusaku Kudo (Shinichi's father) from the Conan manga was the first to realize that 'Kid' is an anagram of the number 1412.
In the series title and the character description, the terms 'magic' and 'magician' should be understood as 'illusionist' or 'stage magician,' as Kaito Kuroba fools his enemies and the police using the craft of illusion, which he learned from his father.
