What's left behind the scenes

  • According to editor Scott Gamson, the 8th episode of the 2nd season was originally intended to use footage from the pilot episode of the original Star Trek series as a flashback. However, in the final version of the episode, footage from the 1966 series was used in the recap at the beginning of the episode.
  • Commander Lieutenant Paul Stamets, the chief engineer of the USS Discovery and an astromycologist, was named after the famous American mycologist Paul Stamets.
  • In the 7th episode of the 3rd season, the starship Yelchin is mentioned. It is most likely named after Anton Yelchin—the actor who played Chekov in the reboot films and tragically died in an accident in 2016 at the age of 27.
  • Jason Isaacs plays Captain Lorca. His character is named after Federico García Lorca (1898-1936), a Spanish poet and playwright who was executed on August 19, 1936, on charges of homosexuality and spying for the USSR. The poet's body was never found.
  • The first Star Trek universe series filmed neither in Hollywood nor anywhere else in the United States. It was filmed at Pinewood Toronto Studios in Canada.
