What's left behind the scenes

  • The scar on Clay's head, played by Dylan Minnette, is used to help the viewer distinguish the past from the present.
  • Due to the show's themes, the atmosphere on set was so depressing that the actors and crew had to resort to animal therapy during breaks. For this purpose, special dogs were kept near the filming location.
  • The series was produced by Netflix and is based on the bestselling novel '13 Reasons Why' by American author Jay Asher.
  • The inspiration for Jay Asher's novel was an incident involving one of his relatives who attempted to take their own life. Some of the events in Asher's book actually happened to teenage girls. While gathering material for the book, Asher spoke with his wife and colleagues about the things they had gone through and how difficult those experiences had been.
  • Before filming began, Christian Navarro had to learn how to drive and obtain his driver's license.
  • Before being cast in the series, neither Katherine Langford, who played Hannah, nor actor Dylan Minnette, who played Clay, had read Jay Asher's novel of the same name (2007). Langford read it between her auditions and the start of filming, while Minnette chose not to read it at all.
  • The sets for the cafe, pharmacy, and movie theater were built into vacant storefronts in the business district of Vallejo, California, USA.
  • Many of the actors involved in the series consulted psychologists to better understand their characters and immerse themselves in their roles.
  • The show's creators conducted a global search for an actress to play Hannah. Tom McCarthy contacted Katherine Langford via Skype. After speaking with her, he declared that he had found the "perfect Hannah."
  • Selena Gomez and her mother, Mandy Teefey, began working on the project back in 2008.
  • The New Zealand government agency responsible for rating film projects and literary works assigned the series a specially created new rating, RP18 (persons under 18 are permitted only when accompanied by a parent or guardian).
  • Dylan Minnette plays the role of Clay Jensen. Jensen is a brand of cassette player, and the plot of the series centers around listening to cassettes.
  • Tony, played by Christian Navarro, has a tattoo of a semicolon on his body. This symbol represents the struggle for mental health and the importance of suicide prevention.
