What's left behind the scenes

  • According to the art department, Sheriff Hopper's trailer cost only 1 dollar.
  • Electronic music reminiscent of the German band Tangerine Dream was chosen as the soundtrack, and excerpts from the group's compositions are heard in some scenes. In the pool scene in the first episode, a composition from the album 'Green Desert' (1986, recorded in 1973) can be heard.
  • In an interview with NPR, the Duffer brothers praised Millie Bobby Brown as an extremely gifted actress, noting her ability to adapt her performance for different lens positions or camera angles, something most child actors cannot do. However, they also mentioned instances on set that reminded them she was still just a little girl. For example, she once arrived on set covered in glitter from head to toe, simply responding, 'I have no idea where it came from.' It took about 45 minutes to wash the glitter off.
  • The Duffer brothers originally wanted to make a remake of Stephen King's film 'It', but later changed their minds. When they decided to create 'Stranger Things', the series retained many references to the author's works.
  • Gaten Matarazzo was the first actor to pass the casting process.
  • Dustin's medical condition is called cleidocranial dysplasia—a hereditary disorder characterized by abnormal development of the skull and collarbone area, as well as delayed eruption of primary and permanent teeth.
  • A reference to Sam Raimi's classic horror film 'The Evil Dead' (1981) can be found in several recurring shots of the Byers' house with a swing set in the background.
  • Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine had previously appeared together in the music video for Roy Orbison's (1936-1988) song 'A Love So Beautiful'.
  • The scenes at the quarry were filmed in the same location as some episodes of 'The Fundamentals of Good' (2016) – another Netflix film.
  • The character of Officer O'Bannon is a reference to the screenwriter of 'Alien' (1979) and 'Dark Star' (1974).
  • The series title is written in capital letters, with one word positioned below the other, and the bottom parts of the first and last letters of the top word slightly overlap the level of the bottom word. This is exactly how the covers of Stephen King's works were repeatedly designed.
  • As a tribute to 1980s cinema, the show's creators named Jim Hopper after one of the characters in John McTiernan's sci-fi action film 'Predator'. It is Jim Hopper's missing team that Arnold Schwarzenegger and his squad attempt to locate in the jungle.
  • Winona Ryder plays the mother of a missing child. In 1994, Gillian Armstrong's film 'Little Women' was released, in which Ryder played one of the lead roles. The actress dedicated this film to Polly Hanna Klaas, a girl from her hometown of Petaluma, California, who was kidnapped and brutally murdered. At the time, Ryder offered a $200,000 reward for any information that could help locate the girl. To this day, the actress remains actively involved in the work of the 'Polly Klaas Foundation to Prevent Child Abuse and Find Missing Children'.
  • In reality, Millie Bobby Brown cannot stand Eggo waffles by the Kellogg Company.
  • In the first season, the average budget per episode was about 6 million dollars. In the second, it was about 8 million.
  • Some of the cars used in the series were manufactured after 1983. For example, Jim Hopper's jeep is a 1985 Chevrolet Blazer, and the Hawkins police car is a 1984 Dodge Diplomat.
  • Gaten Matarazzo's voice changed so significantly by the end of filming that the sound team was unable to use it for ADR (automated dialogue replacement).
  • When Winona Ryder was approached with an offer to take part in this Netflix project, it turned out that she was a complete novice in the field of modern communication and broadcasting methods and had not the slightest idea what streaming multimedia was.
  • The twin actresses who played Holly Wheeler are the same girls who played Judith in 'The Walking Dead' (2010).
  • The Hawkins police department vehicles and uniforms are identical to those used in 'Jaws' and 'Jaws 2'. This includes the color of the police chief's uniform, played there by Roy Scheider, the triangular chevron, and the beige SUV he drove. The police officers in the series also wear blue uniforms and hats, just like their colleagues in the 'Jaws' franchise films.
  • Films from the late 1970s and 1980s had a huge influence on the show's creators—particularly Steven Spielberg's 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (1977), 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' (1982), and 'Poltergeist' (Tobe Hooper, 1982). In the latter case, Spielberg served as a producer and co-writer.
  • During casting and filming, Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the girl nicknamed El, or Eleven, was 11 years old.
  • Finn Wolfhard was the only candidate considered for the role of Mike; however, his participation in the project faced issues due to his involvement in the filming of the remake of 'It' (2017). As it happened, the filming of the latest adaptation of the novel 'It' was postponed by a year due to scheduling conflicts, and the actor managed to balance his participation in both projects.
  • Winona Ryder created Joyce's look based on Meryl Streep's character in the film 'Silkwood' (1983).
  • The quarry scene in the episode 'Chapter Two: The Weirdo on Maple Street' was filmed at the same location as the 'Brothers' episode of 'The Walking Dead'.
  • In the 6th episode of the first season, David Harbour's character lists various organizations that might be monitoring him. He also mentions Al-Qaeda. However, this group was not formed until 1988, whereas the events of the series take place in 1983.
  • In one of their interviews, the Duffer brothers admitted that they were also inspired by the anime 'Elfen Lied', which in turn was inspired by another classic anime — 'Akira'.
  • According to Dragon Magazine, the Demogorgon is considered the strongest villain. He is known as the Prince of Demons of the Abyss, a constantly shifting plane of chaotic evil.
  • At the 54-minute mark of Season 4, Episode 6, when Sue discovers the location of Project Nina, an HTML page is rendered on the computer screen; however, HTML had not yet been created in 1986. Additionally, the page content is formatted using the Flexbox module, which did not appear until 2009.
  • The series logo resembles the font used on the covers of original Stephen King editions from the 80s, specifically 'Cujo' and 'Christine'.
  • The Beretta 92FS pistol carried by the military policeman in the fifth episode did not enter US Army service until 1985, while the series is set in the early 1980s. Additionally, government agents and military police are armed with the HK MP5 submachine gun in the MP5K-PDW variant, which was not developed until 1991.
  • The pathologist in episode 4 is played by Shawn Levy, the director of that episode and an executive producer of the series.
  • The official poster for the series was created by Kyle Lambert. It was done in a style reminiscent of the works of the famous artist Drew Struzan, who designed the official posters for 'Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope' (1977), 'Indiana Jones', 'Back to the Future' (1985), 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial' (1982), and many others.
  • In several episodes, a poster for John Carpenter's film 'The Thing' (1982) appears on screen, reflecting the show's creators' sincere respect for it. A poster for the same film can also be seen in 'The Mist' (Frank Darabont, 2007), based on the Stephen King novella about monsters emerging from the fog.
