What's left behind the scenes

  • The author of the book series the show is based on, Daniel Handler (also known as Lemony Snicket), plays a cameo role as a fish-head salesman in the episode "The Huge Window."
  • In the first episodes, Count Olaf orders the children to perform in a play by a certain Al Funcut. In English, this name is an anagram of "Count Olaf."
  • In the 3rd episode of Season 1, a cinema poster invites viewers to the movie 'Men in Beige.' This is a reference to the series producer Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the 'Men in Black' trilogy (1997, 2002, and 2012).
  • At the beginning of the film, Lemony Snicket, played by Patrick Warburton, introduces the children. In his hand, he holds an object that Klaus discovered at the site of the fire.
  • In the episode 'The Huge Window: Part One,' the father, played by Will Arnett, tries to decipher a letter by arranging letters according to their numerical position in the English alphabet. For some reason, however, he places the letter T over the number 14, although it is the 20th letter of the alphabet. At the same time, slightly above, the viewer can notice the correct letter N over the number 14, while the T is placed correctly over the number 20.
  • The number 13 plays an important role in the series. The children's book series it is based on consists of 13 books, each with 13 chapters. (The final book in the series has one additional chapter, but it is designated as an epilogue.) The English title of the series, "A Series of Unfortunate Events," contains 26 letters, which is twice 13. The premiere took place on January 13, 2017, 13 years after the release of Brad Silberling's film of the same name.
  • Many lines in the dialogues are taken verbatim from the books by Daniel Handler.
  • Catherine O'Hara also appeared in the original film 'Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.' In the movie, she played Judge Justice Strauss, while in the series, she played the ophthalmologist Dr. Georgina Orwell.
  • In the credits, Daniel Handler is listed as the screenwriter and executive producer, while Lemony Snicket is credited as the author of the book series on which the show is based.
  • In one episode, Hooky tells Count Olaf that there is 'too much lemon' in the pie, to which Olaf responds, 'I told you never to mention that name.' In English, 'too much lemon' sounds like 'lemony'—the pseudonym of writer Daniel Handler.
  • All the underlined names in the newspaper shown at the very beginning of the series are anagrams of "Count Olaf" in English.
  • In the episode 'The Reptile Room: Part One,' Count Olaf, posing as Stefano, struggles to use chopsticks. This is a reference to Barney Stinson from the series 'How I Met Your Mother' (2005-2014). Both Count Olaf and Stinson were played by Neil Patrick Harris.
