What's left behind the scenes

  • The bar where the pilot episode takes place is called "Lux," which means "light" in Latin. This is the root of the word "Lucifer," meaning "light-bringer."
  • For locksmiths, a '999 key' refers to a master key that opens all locks. In the Los Angeles Police Department, the term '999 key' has a different meaning. It refers to keys issued to police officers and certain civilian employees that unlock the rear (service) entrance of all police stations. All these keys are identical; they grant access to any police station, and the absence of any markings or identification makes any attempt to track exactly to whom a key was issued useless.
  • Rachel Harris, as Linda, and D.B. Woodside, as Amenadiel, appeared together in seasons 2–4 of the series 'Suits' (2011).
  • The pilot episode mentions Tom Capino's TV series "Californication" (2007): Morningstar says that Trixie is a name for a prostitute. Hank Moody, the main character of "Californication," has an acquaintance who is a prostitute with that name.
  • The lyrics of the songs that occasionally play in the series invariably touch upon themes of the divine and the diabolical (though not necessarily in the specific snippet heard on screen).
  • The series is based on a DC Comics character, Lucifer Morningstar, from the Sandman comic book series.
  • In the Vertigo comics, the characters do not look like they do in the series. Maze (or Mazikeen) is drawn with very pale skin and only has half a face (she covers the other half with a mask in public). Amenadiel is, firstly, white, and secondly, much older than in the series (he is depicted as gray-haired and bearded). As for Lucifer himself, at the insistence of comic author Neil Gaiman, he was specifically given a striking resemblance to singer David Bowie.
  • Lead actors Tom Ellis and Lauren German were born in the same year and month (November 1978), only 11 days apart.
  • Kevin Alejandro replaced Nicolas Gonzalez in the role of Dan after the pilot episode.
  • Lina Esco was initially cast in the role of Maze, but after the script for the pilot episode was read, the role was given to Lesley-Ann Brandt.
  • In Dutch, "Lucifer" means "match".
