What's left behind the scenes

  • After a scene caused by Lance, played by Tom Hollander, in a restaurant, Jonathan, played by Tom Hiddleston, apologizes to an elderly man at the next table and shakes his hand. The author John le Carré himself appeared in the role of the restaurant patron.
  • The series "The Night Manager" contains several references to James Bond films. For example, Jonathan Pine, played by Tom Hiddleston, orders a vodka martini; the CIA officer in London is named Felix, like Felix Leiter of the CIA, who is a contact of Bond; the MI6 phone number contains the digits 007—the number of the "Bondiana" protagonist; and as in the Bond films, the mini-series takes place in the most exotic corners of the world.
  • This is the first television miniseries in the career of Danish director Susanne Bier. In the past, she has directed several feature films in foreign languages.
  • Jonathan Pine, played by Tom Hiddleston, worked as a night manager at the Nefertiti Hotel in Cairo, Egypt, and the Meisters Hotel in Zermatt, Switzerland. These fictional hotels were filmed at the Es Saadi Hotel in Marrakech, Morocco, and the Riffelalp Resort in Zermatt, Valais, Switzerland.
  • As with previous miniseries based on John le Carré's novels, 'Smiley's People' (1979, released in 1982) and 'The Perfect Spy' (1986, released in 1987), the episodes of 'A Night Agent' are untitled. 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy!' (1979), starring Alec Guinness, is the only miniseries based on John le Carré's works where each episode has its own title.
  • The series was filmed in Egypt, Morocco, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
  • It was originally planned to make a film rather than a series. Sydney Pollack (1934–2008) was intended to direct the movie, and Dustin Hoffman, his co-star from the film Tootsie (1982), was planned for the lead role.
  • Previously, Tom Hollander appeared in the spy films "The Imitation Game" (Michael Apted, 2001), "Hanna" (Joe Wright, 2011), "Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation" (Christopher McQuarrie, 2015), as well as in the series "Cambridge Spies" (2003).
  • Angela's husband first appears on screen in episode 5. He is asleep with an open book on his chest. It is 'Fatherland' (1992), a novel by Robert Harris.
  • Jonathan Pine, played by Tom Hiddleston, worked as a night manager at the Nefertiti Hotel in Cairo during the 2011 Egyptian revolution.
  • Tom Hollander and Olivia Colman played a married couple in the television series 'Rev.' (2010-2014).
  • The weapons list in the first episode includes the American F-22 Raptor fighter jet. At the time of filming and up to this point (2016), there is a US Congressional ban on transferring this fighter to any other countries, including US allies. Thus, the F-22 Raptor can only be acquired by the US Air Force.
  • According to the British passport of Richard Onslow Roper shown in the series, he was born on June 11, 1954, in Aldershot, Hampshire. The passport was issued on April 14, 2014, so the character should be 59 years old (60 at the time of the series' filming in 2015).
  • Filming for the miniseries began in London, UK, in the spring of 2015.
  • The Meisters Hotel in Zermatt (Switzerland) is the Hotel Meister Palace in Zurich in John le Carré's novel. The series creators changed Zurich to Zermatt.
  • In the series, Olivia Colman plays Angela Burr, a former MI6 agent. In John le Carré's novel The Night Manager (1993), the prototype for her character is a man: Leonard Burr, a former officer of the Secret Intelligence Service.
  • Published in 1993, the novel 'The Night Manager,' upon which the miniseries is based, was John le Carré's first work to deal with events following the end of the Cold War. Through the efforts of screenwriter David Farr, the setting of the series has been moved from the 1990s to the present day.
  • The secret services and security agencies featured in the series are MI6, the Ministry of Defence, and the International Law Enforcement Agency.
  • Actors Hugh Laurie, Tom Hiddleston, and Tom Hollander, all of whom appear in the series, attended the Dragon School preparatory school in Oxford. Laurie and Hiddleston attended Eton College, which Laurie later described as "the most private of private educational institutions." Laurie and Hollander studied together at Selwyn College, Cambridge, where they both became honorary members.
  • Landscape filming took place in Istanbul. Hugh Laurie was not present during the filming in Istanbul.
  • International Management Group has sold the broadcasting rights for this joint British-American miniseries to 180 countries worldwide.
  • At the very first meeting with the director, Olivia Colman, who had been offered the role of Angela Burr, admitted that she was expecting a child, so the series writers had to make changes to the plot and make Burr pregnant. This happened a few weeks before filming began.
  • As reported by The Telegraph, '...Tom Howard, a location scout, mentioned that during the filming of the miniseries, guests at the Es Saadi Resort in Marrakech, Morocco, were very confused by the interior modifications and changes made by the set decorators. It reached the point where some guests returning in the evening felt as though they had accidentally entered the wrong hotel.'
  • On July 15, 2016, The Guardian published an article by Hannah Ellis-Petersen stating that while preparing for the role of night manager Jonathan Pine, actor Tom Hiddleston spent nights shadowing the night manager of the five-star Rosewood Hotel in London.
  • "The Night Manager" (2016) became the fifth television adaptation of John le Carré's works, all of which were British productions. Viewers are already familiar with "A Murder of Quality" (Gavin Millar, 1991, based on the 1962 novel of the same name), "The Perfect Spy" (Peter Smith, 1987, based on the 1986 novel of the same name), "Smiley's People" (Simon Langton, 1982, based on the 1979 novel of the same name), and "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" (John Irvin, 1979, based on the 1974 novel of the same name).
  • The miniseries was created and first aired approximately 23 years after the publication of John le Carré's novel of the same name (1993).
  • Alastair Petrie, Russell Tovey, and Jonathan Aris all appeared in the series 'Sherlock' (2010), yet the actors never once met, either on screen or on set.
  • Director Susanna Bier once mentioned that Hugh Laurie was initially set on playing Jonathan Pine and did not believe the role of Roper was right for him. Laurie even compiled a list of actors who, in his opinion, were better suited for the part. Fortunately, the director managed to persuade him otherwise.
  • At the end of the final episode, weapons worth 600 million pounds sterling are destroyed.
