What's left behind the scenes

  • While preparing for the roles of the clones, Tatiana Maslany created a list of favorite songs and a dance for each character that she felt best defined them. Thus, Cosima got rave (the dance was performed with glow sticks), Alison got ballet, and Helena's dance was performed away from prying eyes.
  • Tatiana Maslany once stated that she is assisted by specially hired people to ensure she doesn't confuse her characters. For example, if a scene involves both Alison and Sarah, and the character of Alison is supposed to roll her eyes, these assistants remind Maslany to roll her eyes the way Alison does, rather than the way Sarah would.
  • One of the series writers, Graham Manson, claims that Tatiana Maslany arrived at her audition on rollerblades and helped the other candidates waiting for their turn to rehearse their dialogues.
  • Tatiana Maslany and Graham Manson together developed the backstory for each character, including detailed information about their families and childhoods.
  • Evelyne Brochu auditioned for the lead role, which ultimately went to Tatiana Maslany. According to one of the show's creators, Graham Manson, the role of Delphine Cormier was written specifically for Brochu.
  • Jordan Jarvis said that while preparing for the role of Felix, he drew inspiration from the images of glam rockers Mick Jagger and Billy Idol. Neither Jagger nor Idol are actually glam rockers.
  • One of the series' creators and director John Fawcett admitted that the primary source of inspiration for the show was Christopher Nolan's psychological thriller Memento (2000).
  • Tatiana Maslany is a Canadian actress who plays characters of British, American, German, and Ukrainian origin. She also portrays characters of French, Italian, and Austrian origin.
  • Sarah, Cal (Kira's father), and Kira (Sarah's biological daughter) are referred to as the 'Lumberfamily,' which can be translated as a 'sawn-apart family.'
  • Detective Arthur 'Art' Bell, one of the series' main characters, is named after Art Bell, a radio journalist and author. His programs and books are dedicated to scientific issues, including cloning, and various paranormal phenomena.
  • The idea for the series Orphan Black (2013) first came to Graham Manson and John Fawcett back in 2003.
  • Jordan Jarvis and Maria Doyle Kennedy, who play Felix and 'Mrs. C', were both born on the same day, September 25th.
  • All of the clones are played by Tatiana Maslany.
  • The most ardent fans of the series often call themselves 'clone-bians'.
  • Andrew Gillies plays Andrew Peckham. This is a pseudonym; his character's real name is Ethan Duncan.
  • Maria Doyle Kennedy, who played Mrs. C, and James Frain, who played Ferdinand Chevalier, previously appeared together in the historical series 'The Tudors' (2007-2010), where they played Catherine of Aragon and Thomas Cromwell.
  • In the scenes with the clones, lead actress Tatiana Maslany filmed with stand-ins, playing one of her characters first, then another, and so on. After that, all the footage had to be edited together. Director and co-creator of the series John Fawcett called it an "agonizingly slow process."
  • The phone cases in the series change color with each season: they are pink in Season 1, green in Season 2, blue in Season 3, and purple in Season 4.
  • In addition to the many clones she portrayed on screen, Tatiana Maslany voiced the scorpion that Helena sees in her delirium in Season 3. The scorpion on screen was real, not a product of CGI. It was chosen from several that were specifically brought to the set.
  • During the trip to London in Season 3, the role of a musician named Kieran is played by Kieran Kennedy, a musician and husband of actress Maria Doyle Kennedy, who plays Mrs. S. According to the plot, Mrs. S once played in a band with him. The song he performs in the series was written by Kennedy and Doyle-Kennedy themselves.
