Short description

What's left behind the scenes

Andy Samberg and Chelsea Peretti attended the same elementary school—just like their characters, Peralta and Linetti.
The series' cast was trained in the basics of police work and firearm handling, which is unusual for sitcoms.
During filming, several takes of each scene were shot exactly as written in the script; then, the same scene was filmed again with improvisation to make it as funny as possible. This same method was used in the series 'Parks and Recreation' (2009-2015). Michael Schur was one of the creators of both shows.
Andy Samberg had intended to take a break from television projects after eight years on 'Saturday Night Live,' but after reading the script, he decided that it would be a mistake to turn down a role in such a series.
In one episode, the precinct's staff artist falls ill, and Terry Crews' character has to draw a suspect's portrait himself. A similar situation once happened to Crews in real life, when he had to fill in for a sick staff artist.
Chelsea Peretti originally auditioned for the role of Detective Rosa Diaz. That role went to Stephanie Beatriz, and the role of Gina Linetti was written specifically for Peretti.
Studio executives were enticed by promises to include characters in the police series reminiscent of those in "The Office" (2005-2013) and "Parks and Recreation" (2009-2015). In 2012, Dan Goor and Michael Schur secured the support of the Fox network even before they began working on the script.
In the closing credits of every episode, Nick Offerman expresses gratitude to Fremulon Productions, the company owned by Michael Schur that produced the series.
The series featured filming at an actual police station building in Brooklyn, New York.
The series frequently makes jokes about Detective Amy Santiago's inability to dance, yet Melissa Fumero, who plays the role, had been dancing since early childhood.

Melissa Fumero became pregnant during the filming of the third season, but the show's creators decided not to make her character pregnant. Instead, they began dressing her in loose-fitting clothes or filming her in scenes with large bags to hide her belly. The need for such tricks disappeared in the final three episodes, where her character had to feign pregnancy as part of an investigation. In one episode, the police supposedly put a fake belly on her, and she asks if it looks like she is actually pregnant.
