What's left behind the scenes
- During the opening credits, close-ups of real prisoners appear on screen, including Piper Kerman herself, whose memoir served as the basis for the plot. Kerman has blue eyes, and she is seen blinking in the shot.
- The character played by actress and singer Uzo Aduba, nicknamed "Crazy Eyes," was only supposed to appear in the first three episodes, but Aduba's performance was so expressive that it was decided to make her a supporting actress.
- For a while, Big Boo, played by Lea DeLaria, was allowed to keep a dog. Many American prisons have programs that allow inmates to keep dogs for a short period of time. This serves several purposes at once: dog shelters are decluttered, and the number of animals slated for euthanasia is reduced. Dogs are trained to live with humans, and the experience of working with animals helps released inmates find employment in shelters. Additionally, the positive impact that an animal has on a person in incarceration is taken into account.
- The plot is based on Piper Kerman's 2010 book, "Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison." Sentenced to 15 months, Piper spent 13 months in a federal correctional institution in Danbury, Connecticut. In the series, the surname Kerman was changed to Chapman.
- The title of the series and the book it is based on plays on an American fashion proverb: "(any color other than black) is the new black." Bright orange is the traditional color of the scrubs worn by inmates in American prisons.
- Nicky has a scar on her chest from open-heart surgery required due to a bacterial infection caused by drug use. Natasha Lyonne, who played the role, actually has a scar on her chest for the same reason.
- A scene in one of the episodes of the 5th season, in which a prisoner is forced under a shower of boiling water, is based on a real-life event. This happened to a prisoner with schizophrenia in Miami, who was held under boiling water for two hours. The prisoner passed away, but the guards faced no punishment.
