What's left behind the scenes

  • By the start of Season 3, a significant number of acting class students had already been written out of the script—both because the acting studio closed down in the plot, and because many of the actors were already busy with other projects by the time filming for the season began after a two-year hiatus.
  • According to Bill Hader, Anthony Carrigan's character was intended to die in the pilot episode, in the scene where Barry shoots at the car. However, Carrigan's portrayal of the character was so cool that they decided to keep him alive.
  • The long shot in the first episode of Season 3, showing Sally walking across the set of her project, was inspired by Hader's own experiences working on 'Barry,' where, like Sally, he serves simultaneously as producer, director, writer, and actor.
  • Filming for the third season was planned to begin in April 2020, with the season scheduled for release that same autumn; however, these plans had to be changed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the season was not released until April 2022.
  • Bill Hader felt extremely uncomfortable with the presence of weapons on set, even though he knew how to handle them. According to Hader, during the first takes of the very first scene where his character fires a gun, he would turn away and squeeze his eyes shut.
  • Bill Hader came up with the ending for the second season while stuck in traffic on his way to a press conference for the first season in New York. He arrived at the venue just a couple of minutes before the conference began and immediately pulled Alec Berg aside to tell him about his idea.
  • Bill Hader co-wrote the script with Alex Berg after HBO offered him a writing contract; the offer was made after they saw Hader's performance in Craig Johnson's drama 'Twins' (2014).
  • During the filming of the second season, Henry Winkler suddenly realized that he had filmed the series 'Happy Days' (1974-1984) in this very same studio many years ago. Filming was paused while Winkler walked around the studio, explaining where various scenes were shot and where the sets had been located.
  • Henry Winkler came in for an audition. Directors and writers Bill Hader and Alex Berg stated that they would have cast him without any audition at all, but he insisted on doing one and went through the process.
  • The show's creators insisted that the violence in the series should not be glorified or romanticized, and that the emphasis should be placed on the comedic aspects. The actors were even shown recordings of real murders so that they could portray such scenes as authentically as possible.
