What's left behind the scenes

  • It is claimed that Angela Lansbury (1925–2022) and one of the project's creators and producers, Peter S. Fischer, did not harbor very warm feelings toward each other. There are numerous magazine articles discussing how the actress grew tired and constantly demanded changes to the script specifically regarding her character. Furthermore, rumors circulated that Lansbury intended to leave the project upon the expiration of her contract at the end of the fifth season, and that the season's two-part finale was meant to mark the end of the entire series. When Lansbury changed her mind at the last moment and decided to stay (largely due to persuasion from the CBS network, which did not want to lose such a popular project), Fischer had to rewrite the entire script.
  • Jessica's middle name is Beatrice—named after Lansbury's friend, actress and singer Beatrice Arthur (1922–2009).
  • The series is set in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, Maine, but was filmed on the West Coast in Mendocino, California, and on the Universal Studios lot. For the location shots in Mendocino, the Blair House Inn Bed and Breakfast in Los Angeles was used (as the exterior of Jessica Fletcher's house). The building was constructed in 1888. So many scenes were filmed there that the hotel's suite was later renamed 'Angela's Room.' A replica of Jessica's bicycle was installed in the garden. The locations purportedly in New England were actually filmed in Oregon and Northern California.
