What's left behind the scenes
- The first weekly television project whose creators received $1 million for the filming of a single episode.
- The series is considered a milestone in the history of American television. It was the first drama series to feature long takes, handheld camera work, and extended story arcs. Despite low ratings, the first season was nominated for 21 Emmy Awards, a record-breaking number.
- It was originally intended that the characters played by Michael Warren and Charles Haid would die in a shootout at a drug den in the very first episode. However, when it was decided that the series needed more police officers, the plots of several episodes—some already filmed and others still in production—were reworked so that both officers survived. The storylines involving several other police officers were similarly altered.
