What's left behind the scenes
- In 1990, NBC canceled the series after the first season. It immediately became apparent that the show was breaking all popularity records, the rights were promptly sold, and the series was revived. At the peak of its popularity, it was broadcast simultaneously in 148 countries across all continents except Antarctica. The series was not canceled for a second time until 11 years later, in 2001.
- Only a few of the actors in the series could be called strong swimmers, and Pamela Anderson simply hates the water.
- The series is set on the shores of Santa Monica Bay.
- Dean Cain auditioned for the role of Matt Brody.
- Newman and Barnett are actually lifeguards. They were initially hired as technical advisors, but were later added to the cast.
- Alexandra Paul auditioned for the roles of Parker and Quinn, but was cast as Stephanie Holden. The role of Parker went to Pamela Anderson, and the role of Quinn to Nicole Eggert. The role of Stephanie was written specifically for Paul, who impressed the screenwriters, who decided she would be the perfect romantic match for David Hasselhoff's character (who is 192 cm tall).
- In many countries, the series was jokingly dubbed 'Babewatch.' This is a play on the words 'bay' and 'babe,' referring to the fact that many of the actresses were Playboy models.
- Erika Eleniak, Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Marlies Andrade, Brandi Roderick, and Alisha Richter have all posed for Playboy.
- The series had high ratings and was watched even by members of the British royal family.
- The characters' jumpsuits resemble those used by athletes in competitions. According to Alexandra Paul, once an actress was issued a costume, she was no longer allowed to gain weight (though the same applied to the male leads).
