What's left behind the scenes

  • The show was conceived as early as 2004, but Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis did not take it on until work on the series 'Lost' (2004-2010) was completed.
  • The names of many characters in Storybrooke are often linked to their fairy tale prototypes. For example: Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White): Blanchard comes from the French word 'blanc,' meaning white. The name 'Mary Margaret' is borrowed from a real woman believed to be the inspiration for Snow White, named Maria Sophia Margaretha Catharina Freifrau von Erthal (born June 15, 1729, in Germany). Regina Mills (The Evil Queen): Regina is Latin for 'Queen.' Mr. Gold (Rumpelstiltskin): In his story, Rumpelstiltskin spun straw into gold. Ruby (Little Red Riding Hood): Ruby is a gemstone ranging from pink to blood-red shades. Ashley Boyd (Cinderella): Ash (Ashley) precedes cinder in the combustion process. Boyd comes from the Gaelic word 'buidhe,' meaning 'yellow-haired.' Sidney Glass (The Mirror): Because a mirror is also called a 'looking glass.' Additionally, his newspaper is called 'The Mirror.' Archie Hopper (The Cricket): Crickets move by hopping (Hopper -> hop). Furthermore, the word 'cricket' is sometimes used to denote a bunker (hopper). Jefferson (The Mad Hatter): The band Jefferson Airplane has a song called 'White Rabbit,' which reflects imagery from 'Alice in Wonderland.' Cora (The Queen of Hearts): The name is derived from the Latin 'cor,' meaning heart.
  • Several times throughout the series, a wedding ring could be seen on Mr. Gold's hand. This is because Robert Carlyle simply forgot to take off his own during filming; he even wrote about this himself on Twitter.
  • Katee Sackhoff auditioned for the role of Emma Swan.
  • The story at the beginning of the fourth season is a continuation of the animated movie "Frozen" (2013).
  • Producers offered the role of the Blue Fairy to Lady Gaga, but there was no response from her manager. Ultimately, the role was given to Keagan Connor Tracy.
  • It takes two hours to apply Rumpelstiltskin's makeup to Robert Carlyle, not including about 20 minutes to get into costume.
  • The watercolors illustrating the book of fairy tales owned by Henry were created by Portuguese artist Joao Lemos (Joao MP Lemos), who draws comics for Marvel.
  • In the pilot episode of the series, Leroy whistles the composition "Whistle While You Work," which was written for the Disney animated feature "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937).
  • Joshua Dallas (Prince Charming) and Ginnifer Goodwin (Snow White) are husband and wife in real life.
