- Dennis Farina, who played police officer Michael Torelli, worked in law enforcement before filming the movie, while John Santucci, who played Polly Taglia, was previously a professional thief.
- The character of Frank Holman is based on the image of Frank Houheimer, a well-known Chicago thief.
- The role of Manny Weissbord, played by Joseph Wiseman, Ray Luca's mentor, was based on the image of Meyer Lansky.
- Detective Nate Grossman, played by Steve Ryan, was a real police officer. At one time, he worked with one of the creators, Chuck Adamson, and actor Dennis Farina. In real life, Grossman was killed in the line of duty.
