Short description

When Robert “Granddad” Freeman becomes legal guardian to his two grandsons, he moves from the tough south side of Chicago to the upscale neighborhood of Woodcrest (a.k.a. "The Boondocks") so he can enjoy his golden years in safety and comfort. But with Huey, a 10-year-old leftist revolutionary, and his eight-year-old misfit brother, Riley, suburbia is about to be shaken up.

What's left behind the scenes

The series' ambiguous title and creator Aaron McGruder's demand for complete creative freedom led to the project being greenlit several times starting in 1999, only to be shut down shortly after. Initially, McGruder planned to make a conventional series, only later deciding on animation. At various times, HBO and MTV showed interest in the project. In 2003, the Fox network ordered a pilot episode. Their plans to continue the project never came to fruition, and over time, Adult Swim bought the project.
Ed Vansler III and Gene Rummi are based on George W. Bush (the 43rd US President) and Donald Rumsfeld (US Secretary of Defense from 1975-1977 and 2001-2006). Ed wears a medallion with the letter W (for 'Walker'—Bush's middle name), and Gene's surname is a play on Rumsfeld's name.
