What's left behind the scenes

  • Special effects and animatronics expert Kevin Yagher struggled for a long time to find the right nose for the Crypt Keeper puppet. Eventually, director and producer Robert Zemeckis suggested that he go without a nose entirely.
  • In the first season of the series, the Crypt Keeper spoke in John Cassir's voice slowly and deliberately. This was because the show's budget didn't allow for the puppet's mouth to open quickly enough. In subsequent seasons, the Crypt Keeper spoke faster, which made his voice sound more sinister.
  • After voicing the Crypt Keeper, actor John Kassir often had to drink a glass of lemon juice with honey because his throat would start to feel sore and scratchy.
  • Six puppeteers worked on the Crypt Keeper simultaneously, four of whom operated the puppet's face.
  • Many guest stars appeared in only one episode, but some made several appearances in the series—for example, Troy Evans, William Sadler, Joe Pantoliano, Roy Brocksmith, Sherry Rose, Cam Clark, and Peter Van Norden.
  • Instead of blood, Malcolm McDowell drinks juice in the 7th episode of the 3rd season, "Reluctant Vampire" (1991).
  • "Mimic" (Peter Jackson, 1996) and "From Dusk Till Dawn" (Robert Rodriguez, 1996) were intended to be films based on the series, but instead became independent features.
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Patrick, who starred in James Cameron's sci-fi action film "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," were involved in the creation of the series. This happened as the show began to gain popularity. Schwarzenegger directed the 2nd episode of the 2nd season, "The Substitute" (1990), and Patrick appeared in the 7th episode of the 4th season, "The Newcomer" (1992).
  • The famous voice of the Crypt Keeper was created by John Cassir himself. The producers liked it so much during the audition that the actor was cast in the role almost without hesitation.
  • Not all episodes of the series are based on plots from the eponymous comic book series published by EC Comics from October 1950 to February 1955. The storylines of many episodes were borrowed from comic series such as 'The Vault of Horror' (1940s), 'Fear' (1950), 'Shock SuspenStories' (1952-1955), 'Crime SuspenStories' (1950-1955), and 'Frontline Combat' (1950-1955).
  • The 15th episode of the 6th season, "You're the Killer" (1995), was the only one in the series to use computer graphics. This was employed to "resurrect" Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957) on screen, as he is the narrator of the episode.
