Short description
One day, Usagi Tsukino, clumsy 2nd-year middle school student, stumbles upon a talking cat named Luna. Luna tells her that she is destined to be Sailor Moon, "champion of love and justice", and she must search for the fabled Moon Princess. Usagi finds friends that turn out to be destined senshi as well, and together they fight to save the world from the certain doom brought upon by the Dark Kingdom.

What's left behind the scenes
- Almost all the names are meaningful. For example, 'Tsuki no Usagi' means 'moon rabbit,' and 'Moon' is English for 'Luna.' Essentially, the heroic names of the main characters are references to major celestial bodies in the Solar System, while the villains' names are various minerals.
- Artemis is the Latin spelling of the name of the Greek goddess Artemis. This is not a mistake by Naoko Takeuchi, but a joke played out in the manga.
- The idea of having several fighting main characters (unconventional for the maho-shojo genre) was proposed during discussions about the screen adaptation of a previous manga with a similar plot, whose main character was Sailor Venus. From this suggestion, Naoko Takeuchi derived the concept for a new work, the adaptation of which was released parallel to the production of the manga itself. Accordingly, this series became the first in anime history to combine sentai and maho-shojo.
- In Russia, the series was broadcast under the title 'Sailor Moon — Moon in a Sailor Suit'.
- The word "sailor" in the girls' names describes their combat costumes—variations of sailor fuku—"sailor suits," which are a type of female school uniform.
