What's left behind the scenes

To keep the actors (including the extras) energized, Joe Wright would play music very loudly. For example, one long scene had to be filmed at night in the Baths of Caracalla, involving at least 400 extras. Since filming took place at night, Wright played techno at full volume between takes to prevent the actors from getting too tired, making the set easily mistaken for a rave party. This truly energized the actors, and as they began to act naturally, Wright would secretly turn on the camera and film what was happening.
When Joe Wright was hired as director, he initially insisted that the actors deliver their lines in English. However, he soon changed his mind and decided to make the miniseries in Italian for greater authenticity.
