What's left behind the scenes
- The series is based on the life of William Adams (1564–1620), a navigator whose ship was wrecked off the coast of Japan in 1600, making him the first Englishman to visit the country. Over time, Adams and his first mate became the first European-born samurai in the service of the shogun.
- The character of John Blackthorne, the series' protagonist, is based on William Adams, who was fluent in several foreign languages.
