What's left behind the scenes

  • Alan Ball had 13 days to film the pilot episode.
  • The pilot episode contains advertisements for funeral home products. Initially, they wanted to insert them into various episodes, but later decided to put them all into one.
  • HBO renewed the series for a second season a week after the pilot episode aired.
  • The Philippine Federation of America is located at the fictional address of the Fisher & Sons funeral home.
  • The coffins for the series were made by the ABC Caskets workshop in Los Angeles.
  • Only two episodes were written by more than one author: episode 30, "Nobody Sleeps," and episode 49, "The Black Forest," which is very unusual for series, as scripts are typically written by a writing team.
  • Every episode written by writer and cartoonist Bruce Eric Kaplan begins with the word "The" in the episode title (The Foot, The Dare...).
  • Lauren Ambrose was 23 when she played 17-year-old Claire Fisher in the first season.
  • Frances Conroy (Ruth Fisher) is only 12 years older than Peter Krause (Nate Fisher), yet she plays his mother.
  • Lauren Ambrose (Claire Fisher), Freddie Rodriguez (Federico Diaz), Eric Balfour (Gabriel Dimas), and Peter Facinelli (Jimmy) all appeared together in the movie 'Can't Hardly Wait' (1998).
  • Chenowith, the surname of Brenda and her family, is the name of series creator Alan Ball's basketball coach.
  • In the first episode of the first season, while Nate is talking to Brenda on the phone in the supermarket, the ring on Brenda's hand changes from a large one with a stone to a simple gold band.
