What's left behind the scenes

  • Rill Mayer looks very similar to Amy Lee, the lead singer of Evanescence. In an interview, the artist who created Rill's look stated that he was specifically inspired by Amy during her creation.
  • The tenth episode shows a cemetery. The tombstone bears the name of Dai Satō, the screenwriter of this animated film.
  • The name of the AutoReiv Pino is an unambiguous nod to Pinocchio—the wooden toy who gained a soul.
  • The cricket from Smile-land (an AutoReiv observer) resembles the similar character from 'The Adventures of Pinocchio'.
  • The events take place in the city of Romdo; meanwhile, in Spain, there is a city called Ronda, which is situated at an altitude of about 1,000 meters and stands on the banks of a 100-meter-deep gorge.
  • Based on the series, a two-volume manga titled Ergo Proxy: Centzon Hitchers and Undertaker was released.
  • Autoreiys use a Turing program that allows them to speak indistinguishably from humans. This is a reference to the real-life Turing test, which is used to determine whether a computer possesses intelligence.
  • The title of the third episode of the series, "Jump into Nothingness," is taken from a novel of the same name by Alexander Belyaev.
  • "Ergo Proxy" can be translated from Latin as "therefore, the representative." The Japanese version of the translation, however, sounds like "representative of death."
  • In the nineteenth episode, where Pino ends up in Smile-land, it can be noted that Will B. Good (the proxy of this dome) looks very much like Walt Disney.
  • The name Daedalus Yumeno, as well as the fact that the Monad Proxy flew toward the Sun and perished, alludes to the story of Icarus.
  • The series contains several references to Lewis Carroll's fairy tale 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland': the ship on which Vincent, Reel, and Pino flew was called the 'Rabbit,' and it was on this ship that they effectively discovered a new world—in this case, the Wasteland and the other Domes. Additionally, at the beginning of the eighth episode, the book 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' itself can be seen (evident from the illustrations), after which Pino mentions the card knights in conversation. Pino is seen reading this book later in episode 13 as well.
  • Reel Meyer's identification number is 're-l124C41+'. When read aloud, it sounds like 'Real one to foresee for (another) one.' This play on words can be translated as 'The one who truly foresees the appearance of another (proxy)' or 'Someone true who foresees the appearance of another.' It is Reel Meyer who manages to discover the First Proxy, who had been hiding by taking advantage of Vincent's amnesia. This number is likely also a reference to Hugo Gernsback's science fiction novel 'Ralph 124C 41+'.
  • The name of the Cogito virus that affects the auto-ravers is a reference to the Cartesian 'cogito ergo sum,' which translates from Latin as 'I think, therefore I am.'
