Short description

Prequel to the Henry James classic "Turn of the Screw" about the events leading up to the deaths of Peter Quint and Ms. Jessel, and the slow corruption of the children in their care.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Michael Winner (1935-2013) initially planned to cast Vanessa Redgrave in the role of Miss Jessel, but she was busy filming in Italy and declined the offer. Jenny Linden also turned down this role.
  • Miss Jessel's death required actress Stephanie Beacham to be in cold water. For the filming, she was advised to wear a thicker, warmer wetsuit, but she chose the thinnest one that wouldn't hide her figure.
  • Stephanie Beacham completely disrobed for filming an erotic sadomasochistic scene with Quint, played by Marlon Brando (1924-2004). He, naturally, refused to disrobe completely and remained in his underwear and, for some reason, shoes.
  • The film is based on the novella "The Turn of the Screw" (1898) by Henry James (1843-1916).
