Short description

In the early days of Nazi Germany, a powerful noble family must adjust to life under the new dictatorship regime.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film begins on the night of the Reichstag fire (February 27, 1933); however, when the police inspector dictates a report to his secretary (later that night or early the next morning), he states the date as February 18, 1933.
  • The man depicted in the black and white photograph as a hero of World War I is, in reality, Hermann Göring (1893-1946).
  • At the time of filming, Charlotte Rampling was only 23 years old, but she played a heroine whose daughter was already 11 years old.
