Short description

Karl and Kristina Nilsson work on a farm in a cold and desolate area of 19th century rural Sweden. Growing privations, combined with increasing social and religious persecution, motivate the Nilssons and many of their neighbors to strike out for the United States. Following a treacherous ocean crossing and an equally grueling land passage, the emigrants find themselves in seemingly idyllic Minnesota.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of a scene near the end of the film, when Carl, played by Max von Sydow (1929-2020), goes in search of a new settlement, the director and cinematographer Jan Troell forgot to call "Cut!", and the actor disappeared into the distance waiting for the director's command, and no one even noticed until lunchtime.
  • Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) was a big fan of the film. He even called Troell to tell him so, but Troell took it as a prank and hung up (this happened repeatedly when Kubrick called someone to express his admiration). Kubrick especially liked the costumes, and he even brought costume designer Ulla-Britt Söderlund (1943-1985, who worked on this film) in to assist Milena Canonero when costumes from the 18th century were needed for the 1975 drama "Barry Lyndon."
  • Jan Troell and screenwriter Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973) argued about whether the actors should speak with an accent. Troell insisted that they speak with a Småland accent (Småland is a historical province in southern Sweden, where the film is set), while Moberg did not want any dialect to be heard in the film at all. As a result of a compromise, the characters played by Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann speak with an accent, while all the others – for example, the characters played by Eddie Axberg and Pierre Lindstedt – speak with a very faint accent.
