Short description

Pierrot escapes his boring society and travels from Paris to the Mediterranean Sea with Marianne, a girl chased by hit-men from Algeria. They lead an unorthodox life, always on the run.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's title was intended to evoke associations for French audiences with the famous 1940s outlaw Pierre Lutrel, also known as 'Pierrot le Fou' (Pierrot the Madman), a highly romanticized version of whose exploits is presented in Jacques Demy's film 'The Gang,' based on the novel by Roger Borniche.
  • Godard parried accusations of excessive violence and corpses with the now-famous phrase: "It's not blood, it's just red." Color symbolism plays a defining role in the artistic structure of the film.
