Short description
En route to the honeymoon of William Riker to Deanna Troi on her home planet of Betazed, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise receives word from Starfleet that a coup has resulted in the installation of a new Romulan political leader, Shinzon, who claims to seek peace with the human-backed United Federation of Planets. Once in enemy territory, the captain and his crew make a startling discovery: Shinzon is human, a slave from the Romulan sister planet of Remus, and has a secret, shocking relationship to Picard himself.
What's left behind the scenes
- Unlike the explosions, the ramming of the two starships was not a product of computer technology. The film crew suspended both models, hit one against the other, and filmed the process in slow motion.
- Sir Patrick Stewart performed almost all of the scenes of flights on the shuttle «Enterprise» himself.
- In the initial version of the script, it was intended that Sir Patrick Stewart would play both Captain Picard and Shinzon, and the final battle between the starships under their command would take place in Earth orbit.
- In one interview after the film's release, Tom Hardy recounted that he approached working with director Stuart Baird with all seriousness, hoping that the role would bring him fame. The film's commercial failure and the reaction to it from fans of the franchise led to Hardy breaking up with his girlfriend, starting to abuse alcohol, and even contemplating suicide. He stopped being upset about this film only when he pulled himself together and starred in Nicolas Winding Refn's crime drama "Bronson" (2008).
- The farewell scene with Captain Picard had to be reshot, as Sir Patrick Stewart unexpectedly burst into tears.
