When wily pirate Captain Barbossa seizes Jack Sparrow’s beloved ship, the Black Pearl, and kidnaps the governor’s daughter, Elizabeth Swann, blacksmith Will Turner reluctantly teams up with the unpredictable pirate Jack to rescue her—only to uncover a terrifying curse that turns Barbossa’s crew into the undead.

- One of the film’s final lines – “Bring me that horizon” – is an improvisation by Johnny Depp.
- The scene where Will and Jack walk underwater, holding a boat above them, is a reference to "The Crimson Corsair" (1952).
- When Will regains consciousness after the pirate attack, the same girl who played young Elizabeth (Lucinda Dryzek) can be seen in the background.
- Johnny Depp wore contact lenses that served as sunglasses to prevent him from squinting in the bright sun.
- According to commentary on the DVD, Geoffrey Rush developed a theory that people look at the screen from left to right just as they read a book. Therefore, he tried to be on the left side of the screen as often as possible, especially in scenes with the monkey and Keira Knightley, because otherwise, he said, no one in the audience would notice him in those scenes.
- Johnny Depp's character, Jack Sparrow, flashes his golden teeth several times throughout the film. However, few people know that these teeth are not makeup, but actual dental implants. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer didn't like the abundance of gold in Johnny's mouth and asked him to leave only a couple of teeth with a golden sheen.
- After the film became a hit, the Walt Disney Company closed the "Pirates of the Caribbean" ride in Disneyland parks in order to make some renovations. A storyline was added to the ride in which Captain Barbossa pursues Jack Sparrow.
- Jack Sparrow’s famous phrase – “savvy?” – is an improvisation by Johnny Depp.
- Jack Sparrow's lines about the eunuch were improvised by Johnny Depp.
- Alan Silvestri was originally supposed to compose the music for the film, but was replaced by Klaus Badelt.

- According to commentary by the screenwriters on the DVD, Will Turner is the best swordsman of all the characters in the film, followed by Barbossa and Commodore Norrington. Jack Sparrow is the worst of all.
- Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski planned to shoot in a giant artificial pool that had previously been used for "Titanic" and "Pearl Harbor," but the crew of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" worked faster and rented the pavilion for the same time that the filming of "Pirates" was scheduled to take place.
- The "Jolly Roger" emblem (a skull and two crossed bones on a black background), used as a pirate flag on the "Black Pearl", was first conceived by the legendary pirate Jack Rackham. He also became famous for including two women in his crew – Mary Read and Anne Bonny. Incidentally, one of the film's heroines, Anamaria, is nothing more than a combination of the aforementioned pirate ladies.
- Johnny Depp modeled Jack Sparrow's unforgettable behavior after one of his best friends, Keith Richards, inexplicably deciding that pirates of the 18th century closely resembled rock stars.
- The East India Trading Company actually branded pirates with the letter 'P', however, the brand was placed on the forehead, not the hand.
- Keira Knightley wore a wig because her hair was not long enough for the role of Elizabeth due to previous roles.
- This is the first film from Walt Disney Pictures to receive a rating (PG-13 – only those over the age of 13 are allowed to view it).
- On August 10, 2002, a fire broke out in one of the pavilions where filming was taking place. No one present on set was injured, and the damage from the fire was estimated at $350,000.
- Jude Law, Ewan McGregor, Tobey Maguire, Christopher Masterson, and Christian Bale were considered for the role of Will Turner.

- The idea for the film arose under the impression of the identically named attraction at the famous Disneyland. The world premiere, naturally, took place at the same Disneyland on June 28, 2003. Notably, it was the first film premiere to be held there.
- The idea for the film had been brewing with screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio for a long time, but producers initially rejected the proposal in the early 1990s.
- The film was originally planned to be simply titled “Pirates of the Caribbean,” but later, in anticipation of a sequel, the second part was added to the title: “The Curse of the Black Pearl.”
- The words 'pirate' and 'piracy' are spoken 56 times throughout the film.
- Keira Knightley, just like Johnny Depp, wore contact lenses in the final scene of the film.
