Short description

Scientists and US Air Force officials fend off a blood-thirsty alien organism while investigating at a remote arctic outpost.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on John W. Campbell Jr.'s story "Who Goes There?" (1938).
  • One of the final lines of the film became iconic: the warning "Watch the skies!" was subsequently repeatedly quoted in popular culture.
  • Although Christian Nyby was credited as director, it is widely believed that the true creator of the film was its producer, the legendary Howard Hawks, who was reluctant to associate his name with the "low" genre of science fiction, as it was considered at the time.
  • In one of the dialogues, the characters in the film mention another Howard Hawks film, "Sergeant York" (1941).
  • The film was included by Stephen King in his list of 100 most significant horror films from 1950 to 1980.
  • In 2001, the film was added to the National Film Registry.
