What's left behind the scenes
- Filming for the series began on November 22, 2022. In February 2023, a hiatus was announced for the project after Alison Schapker and Shirley Henderson (who played Tulu Harkonnen) left the production. In June of the same year, Olivia Williams was brought in to replace her, and Jodie May replaced Indira Varma, who played Empress Natalia. Varma had to leave the series due to commitments to other projects.
- Initially, screenwriter Jon Spaihts served as showrunner, but he later left the project to focus on Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two (2024). By July 2021, screenwriter Diane Ademu-John became the new showrunner. As work progressed on the film Dune: Part Two, Denis Villeneuve had less and less time to direct this project, and in April 2022, he was replaced by Johan Renck as the director of the series' first two episodes. Shortly after production began, it was announced that Ademu-John was stepping down as showrunner but remaining with the project as an executive producer, leaving Alison Schapker as the sole showrunner.
- The series' script unfolds 10,000 years before the events described in Frank Herbert's first book, Dune (originally published in a magazine between 1963 and 1965).
