What's left behind the scenes

  • Before filming began, Mark Ruffalo lost 9 kg for the role of Dominic. After 16 weeks, he took a 6-week break to gain 13 kg for the role of Thomas. He ate whatever he wanted, including massive amounts of fast food, donuts, mashed potatoes, and oatmeal. Gabe Fazio, who played Sean, is the same height as Ruffalo, so he frequently filmed alongside him, playing whichever twin Ruffalo was not portraying at the time. When Ruffalo gained weight, Fazio lost 13 kg for the role of Dominic.
  • It was initially intended to be a 20th Century Fox film, with Jonathan Demme as director. Later, it was proposed that Jim Sheridan would direct, Richard Friedenberg would write the screenplay, and Matt Damon would star in the lead role.
  • A car dealership was rented for filming; however, one day after a shoot, a fire broke out and completely destroyed the premises and everything inside, including about a dozen vintage cars.
  • Before filming Dominic's repeated outbursts of anger, director Derek Cianfrance made Mark Ruffalo do 50 push-ups. The actor was on a diet, so he already had a short temper.
  • When it came time to film Thomas's scenes, Mark Ruffalo often had to be literally coaxed out of his trailer. In getting into character, the actor mirrored Thomas psychologically, becoming nervous and fearful of the world around him.
  • Screenwriter Wally Lamb was convinced that the project would be better suited as a miniseries. He saw only Mark Ruffalo in the lead role and even sent him the novel that served as the basis for the production. Ruffalo read it and immediately decided to take the part.
  • For the production, a building that housed a Sonic drive-in fast food restaurant was converted into an old-style McDonald's.
