What's left behind the scenes

  • In episode 7, the 'Moscow, 1968' title card contains many continuity errors: Red Square (the Kremlin and Saint Basil's Cathedral) is shown with cars driving across it, yet vehicle traffic there had been halted in 1963. Additionally, the modern Russian flag (rather than the USSR's) is flying over the Kremlin; GUM is decorated in a modern style; and the road signs are new.
  • Initially, to prepare for the role, Anya Taylor-Joy wanted to work with a chess coach, but she was unable to do so due to her tight schedule. The actress memorized each chess game immediately before filming.
  • In the second episode at the 25-minute mark, when Beth goes to the store for cigarettes and the clerk gives them to her, it is visible that there is only one pack, not three. However, at the 27-minute mark, when Beth brings the cigarettes home, she already has three packs in her hand.
  • In the middle of episode 7 (the canteen scene), the view from the window shows the Kremlin as being too long, which does not correspond to reality.
  • In episode 7, a crowd is shown listening to a match broadcast on a VEF-202 radio. However, this model was produced starting in 1971, while the events of the episode take place in 1968.
  • Due to the series, Georgian chess player Nona Gaprindashvili filed a $5 million lawsuit against Netflix. She was referred to as Russian in the show, and it was claimed that she had never played against men. The lawsuit notes that by 1968, when the story takes place, Gaprindashvili had played against more than 50 male chess players. On September 6, 2022, the parties reached a settlement.
  • In episode 6, the song 'Venus' is played, and a performance by the group Shocking Blue is shown on TV. After this, the protagonist travels to the Henry Clay school, and the credits state: '1968 Kentucky State Chess Championship.' In reality, the song 'Venus' was recorded and released in 1969.
  • Mr. Shaibel gives Elizabeth a book titled 'Modern Chess Openings.' This book was written by Richard Cleland Griffith and John Herbert White and was first published in 1911. Since then, it has been reprinted many times and is considered the first scientific study of chess openings.
  • The scenes in Las Vegas, New York, Paris, and Moscow were filmed in Berlin.
  • The original title of the series translates as 'The Queen's Gambit'.
  • Anya Taylor-Joy is a great fan of the novel upon which the series is based, and she insisted that her character be red-haired. Anya also chose the hairstyles and clothing worn by Beth.
  • The chess pieces in the series are always arranged correctly, and the chess games and positions are realistic. Master of Sport Bruce Pandolfini and Grandmaster Garry Kasparov served as consultants for the series.
