What's left behind the scenes

Picar's dog, named Number One, is played by a pit bull from a dog shelter named Dinero. Actor Patrick Stewart, who played Picar, insisted on this specific breed because he and his wife are volunteers for a pit bull rescue organization. Screenwriter and producer Michael Shebon recounted that Dinero was a very sweet and friendly dog, but had absolutely no skill in working for the camera. Scenes with Number One had to be reshot numerous times because Dinero would not follow commands.
This series is linked to the plot of J.J. Abrams' science fiction film Star Trek (2009) by mentioning the destruction of the planet Romulus, which caused Spock and Nero's crew to end up in the past and created an alternative timeline for Kirk's crew. However, the series does not follow the alternative timeline created in that film, but remains in the primary timeline in which the events of the Star Trek universe unfold.
Like the project Star Trek: Discovery (2017), this series was intended to be filmed in Toronto, Canada; however, during pre-production, it was decided to move to California, where tax payments were $16 million lower.
