What's left behind the scenes

  • The series contains references to previous test subjects, stating that they were 'McMurphy-ed.' This is a reference to Patrick McMurphy, played by Jack Nicholson in Miloš Forman's drama One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975).
  • Several episodes contain references to Miguel de Cervantes (1547–1616), author of the novel 'The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha' (the first volume was published in 1605, the second in 1615), about a nobleman who fought his own hallucinations and hoped to save the world, much like Owen, who believes himself to be the Chosen One.
  • Cary Joji Fukunaga directed the first season of 'True Detective.' In one of the episodes, a character played by Matthew McConaughey flicks ash into a mug labeled 'Big Hug Mug.' This same mug can be spotted in the 10th episode of this project.
  • The van in which Annie escapes with Owen was used in several scenes. Greta, played by Sally Field, used it to drive the main character away from her sister, played by Julia Garner. The same van was driven by a representative of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • The logos for NPB and Maniac are based on the design of the IBM logo (specifically the letters composed of horizontal lines).
  • At the end of the credits after each episode, Owen says the phrase, 'Annie, I am a hawk!'
  • In the final episode, Annie visits Owen (played by Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, respectively) and signs the visitor's log as 'Wendy Lemuria.' This is a reference to the 4th episode, where the characters rescue a female lemur named Wendy, who was injured by a poster on the wall in Annie's living quarters (which viewers saw in the 2nd episode). The name 'Lemuria' is also a reference to Richard Shaver's 1945 science fiction story 'I Remember Lemuria.' Shaver himself claimed to have once been held captive by members of an ancient underground race, and many readers later reported similar experiences. Some believe that Shaver and his followers suffered from schizophrenia, much like Jonah Hill's character in this series.
  • Cell phones or smartphones are never shown in the series. All phone calls are made exclusively via wired connections and landline telephones.
  • The dance used during the séance to attempt contact with the dead is a reference to the dance in Jean-Luc Godard's crime drama Band of Outsiders (1964).
