What's left behind the scenes

After the 1960 season, Ray Collins (1889-1965) appeared in only a few episodes due to health issues. Years of smoking had caused emphysema, and he also began forgetting his lines; as a result, he had to leave the cast in the middle of the seventh season. Although he no longer participated in filming, his name was kept in the credits to provide moral support and to ensure he could receive various healthcare benefits provided through his membership in the actors' union. Collins passed away just before the start of the show's final season.
William Talman (1915-1968) was fired from the cast after a Hollywood party he attended was raided by police. Talman denied any illegal activity at the party, but he was fired regardless on moral grounds (his contract included a clause allowing for the termination of an actor due to actions that tarnished their image). This incident affected the rest of his career, and he appeared in films very rarely thereafter.
In most episodes, the climactic courtroom scenes depict preliminary hearings (a legal procedure where the prosecution proves there are sufficient grounds for a trial) rather than the trial itself; since juries are not required at preliminary hearings, the show's creators did not have to spend money on extras to play jurors.
