What's left behind the scenes

  • In one of the storylines, the action takes place in the city of Aomori, where Yo Asakura met Anna. This is the city where the manga author Hiroyuki Takei was born.
  • In the original voice acting, the names of some characters are pronounced differently. For example, Jinni (Ren Tao's cousin) is called Gain, and Bazilla (one of Hao's henchmen) is called Ashiru.
  • In the English dub of the anime, Ryu speaks with a Spanish accent, while in the American version, Jun Tao speaks with a British accent.
  • Hiroyuki Takei was absolutely livid when he saw the adaptation of his manga, and he suspended work on the manga for several years.
  • There are serious differences between the anime and the manga: In the manga, the main characters reach Dobbi Village much faster than in the anime. Key characters such as Matamun, the siblings Redseb and Seiram are missing from the anime, but it introduces Team Lily 5, who are not in the original. In the anime, Lyserg Diethel joined the X-Laws in a deserted town occupied by the fake vampire Boris. In the manga, he was inspired by the power of the X-Laws and disappeared after arriving at Dobbi Village, later participating in battles for a new team. In the Jetix anime version, the main characters' names were changed. For example, Ren (sometimes Len) Tao became Lenny Tao; Hao became a character named Zeke; Horokeu Usui (sometimes Horohoro) became Trey Racer; Jeanne the Maiden became Iron Maiden Jean; Manta Oyama became a boy named Morty; Ryunosuke "Ryu" Umemiya became a character named Rio; Manta's assistant Tamurazaki became Uncle Jerry, and Ren's father, En Tao, became his uncle. Additionally, some key dialogues and phrases were altered, blood was cut from some scenes, and the name of the small people Horohoro wanted to protect was changed: in the manga they were called "Koropokkuru," while in the American anime version they were called "Minutians." In the original ending, the character Hao did not die, but survived and became the Shaman King. In the manga, Faust was confined to a wheelchair, although he later found a way to stand on his own feet. Toward the end, he also dies, becoming a spirit and reuniting with his beloved. Such changes did not occur in the anime version. The character Ren Tao dies in different ways. In the anime, he is killed by Peyote while protecting Horohoro from Lucius's attack; there, Faust resurrects him using furyoku. In the manga, he is again killed by Peyote Dias, but this time Ren fails to notice the attack and is pierced by the Great Spirit's knife. He is then resurrected by Jeanne the Maiden, who exchanges Tao's life for his withdrawal from the tournament by Yoh.
  • In episode 48, Lenny's team fights Team Destiny, whose members resemble famous rock performers such as Ronnie James Dio and Jimi Hendrix. Incidentally, the captain of this team is named Ronnie. It is also mentioned that one of them bit the head off a bat—a reference to Ozzy Osbourne.
