What's left behind the scenes

Doyle's death was planned from the very beginning, and Glenn Quinn was aware of this when he signed on for the role.
It was originally planned that Angel in Los Angeles would be assisted by Whistler (a half-demon from the series 'Buffy'). However, Max Perlich, who played the role, could not sign a long-term contract for the series, and that is how Doyle 'came to be'.
According to the plot, at some point between episodes 3.04 and 3.05, Angel traveled to meet the resurrected Buffy; their meeting remained off-screen and was not shown in either 'Angel' or 'Buffy'.
